On his official website there is this:
John McCain Will Reform Social Security. He will fight to save the
future of Social Security while meeting our obligations to the
retirees of today and the future without raising taxes. John McCain
supports supplementing the current Social Security system with
personal accounts – but not as a substitute for addressing benefit
promises that cannot be kept. He will reach across the aisle, but if
the Democrats do not act, he will. John McCain will not leave office
without fixing the problems that threatens our future prosperity.
Not much meat there.
Did you see any at all?
Um...I guess not. But I do see a problem with subject and verb
agreement as in "fixing the problems that threatens our future
prosperity."
Also that line "but not as a substitute for addressing benefit
promises that cannot be kept -- what the hell does he mean by
that? What benefit promises can't be kept?
Politicians like to talk in code. For Republican politicians, the
ideal code-talk is where typical Republicans hear one thing, the
Religious right hears another and Democrats and Independents hear
something else. In the case of "fixing the problems that threaten(s)
our future prosperity", McCain would probably like Republicans in the
know to interpret that to mean "We've got to figure out a way to avoid
paying Social Security back all that money we borrowed". For the
younger generation, though, he would like them to think he's worrying
about their future retirement while at the same time trying to scare
them with the words "promises that cannot be kept" and then
simultaneously appeasing the far-right by insuring that the promises
won't be kept by refusing to eliminate the cap, for instance, or
suggesting any ways to fix the problem.
