Astronomers have found some matter that had been missing in deep space
and say it is strung along web-like filaments that form the backbone
of the universe.
The ethereal strands of hydrogen and oxygen atoms could account for up
to half the matter that scientists knew must be there but simply could
not see, the researchers reported on Tuesday.

Hmmm. I thought that the "missing matter" was supposed to be evidence
of the existence of God!
Everything not yet known is evidence of the existence
of God, of course: "God of the Gaps", as He's been called.
He used to have a lot to do. His angels had to push the
planets around (occasionally stopping for coffee, at which
times most of the planets tended to slide back so that the
angels had to run back and catch them and start them
moving in the right direction again). He used to make rain.
He used to visit drought and plague upon those who
annoyed Him by not being pious enough. (You know
how difficult He can be when He gets annoyed.) He
commanded the slaughter of those unfortunate enough to
live in land that was needed for the expanding lebensraum
of the Chosen People, or who had enough daughters who
had not yet known man to make slaughtering their parents
and brothers and taking those daughters as sex-slaves
cost-effective.

Ditto. But you have to really wonder if the writer meant that....
:^) I agree, and I do wonder that. often. I read (or perhaps
heard) Rumpl's comments as a marvelous jazz riff, taking off from the
material at hand and creating something completely new from it.
Looks like I did something amazing I wasn't

No, I watch altogether too much junk TV, but it's usually sitcoms (and Judge Judy) in my case, rather than game shows. I do occasionally watch Jeopardy.

I can't stand "reality" shows like the "Island" shows and "American Idol". I've never watched even one of them for more than a minute or two. I did like the old
"Gong Show", which was perhaps an ancient predecessor of the reality shows.

An old Science Fiction writer, I can't remember who offhand, foresaw the reality shows. In the novel of
which I'm thinking of, the entire society had been dumbed-down. There were shows on TV where members of the mostly ignorant population could win prizes. There was one contestant who was hopelessly dense, who floundered about in response to the simplest questions. She kept getting prompted more and more heavily by the show's panel of experts, until finally she won the prize. She was very happy and proud of herself. The emcee and the panel of experts congratulated her on her perspicuity. Maybe it was "Fahrenheit 451"?


Wasn't there a reality show recently where adults were pitted against 5 year olds? I suppose it appealed to the "I'm dumb and proud of it" crowd.
