How many people would want to be president, let alone first lady? Who
has a life so spotless that someone can't say, I smoked dope with him
in college, or she paid me without deducting social security, or a
hundred other things. My God these candidates have reporters and
investigators going over every vote, every tape, every written word --
interviewing friends and enemies, yee gods! A neighbor of my father's
was a nominee to run a very large, very well known, federal agency. He
is and was a great guy, and an honest man, but when they got through
with him he was so beaten up he couldn't have been elected dog
catcher. I can't understand why anyone would subject themselves to
that. Of one thing I am certain, there is more to it than a "desire to
serve". Personally, I enjoy my anonymity. (-8

I have always said that. We devour anyone in the public eye no matter how
altruistic, how talented, how good for us all they may be. No one in their
right mind would want that, and I am always amazed that some still do.

I spent all of the '80s in public office in my home town. Then, after a delightful 17 years of retired living, I lost my mind and ran again last year and ended up as the top vote getter. I like to think that, if I find the mind that I misplaced when I decided to run again, it'll turn out to be the right one I had in retirement.

While I'd like to say that it's a thankless task, that's not really true. The part of my community that's enlightened and that agrees with me often go out of their way to thank me for my efforts and to encourage me to continue the good works. Everybody needs to feel wanted or needed by someone and, take it from me, it's an ego massager like few others. It doesn't hurt to be on a first name basis with your police chief, either.
