Story Highlights
Glaciers are shrinking at record rates, according to U.N. Environment
Program
Scientists say 30 glaciers around the world showed record ice loss in 2006
UNEP warns ice loss could have dramatic consequences particularly in India
Glaciers lost an average of about a foot of ice a year between 1980 and
1999
30 glaciers eh? How many are there in the world? 3000?
There are 100 000 in Alaska alone some advancng some retreating.
There are 3,300 in the the Himalayas, the shrinking of which would affect India, according to the report The UN study included glaciers around the world.

Please name one glacier on which the West Coast of the United States
depends on for it's water supply.

"Global Warming? It's The Coldest Winter In Decades

NEW evidence has cast doubt on claims that the world’s ice-caps are
melting, it emerged last night.

Satellite data shows that concerns over the levels of sea ice may have
been premature.

It was feared that the polar caps were vanishing because of the
effects of global warming.

But figures from the respected US National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration show that almost all the “lost” ice has come back.

Ice levels which had shrunk from 13million sq km in January 2007 to
just four million in October, are almost back to their original
levels.

Figures show that there is nearly a third more ice in Antarctica than
is usual for the time of year.

The data flies in the face of many current thinkers and will be seized
on by climate change sceptics who deny that the world is undergoing
global warming.

A photograph of polar bears clinging on to a melting iceberg has
become one of the most enduring images in the campaign against climate
change.

It was used by former US Vice President Al Gore during his
Inconvenient Truth lectures about mankind’s impact on the world. But
scientists say the northern hemisphere has endured its coldest winter
in decades."

Because California glaciers are so petite, serious glacier scientists have passed them by in favor of trips to Greenland, Antarctica, Alaska, and Iceland. But the specter of global warming and its potentially disastrous effects on California's water supply has finally gained the state's glaciers some respect.

It all comes down to water. State reservoirs don't hold enough to keep faucets running through the summer. The steady trickle of melting snow on the mountaintops, which builds to a rushing roar in the foothills, keeps lakes filled and creeks flowing through a dry season that can last six months. "Snowpack is the holy grail of water supply in California.
