being adopted or not adopted.

So, you are saying that anything goes? And you believe that this is
the
best way to select the person who is best for the job?

It fits Jerry's definition of "success", doesn't it?

There you have it. It fits many peoples definition of "success" but that
doesn't make it moral or right, or good for the country, either those in
it
or outside of it. Am I crazy for wanting a president to lead us who has
moral fiber and genuine wisdom? Am I a fool for thinking that slanderous
or misleading campaign practices should somehow be way beneath the person
who would lead us?

Might may make right, and dirty tactics may win, but the people won't
forget
what got you there, and you will never be trusted or believed.... (unless
you are a republican who believed every lying word GWB uttered for the
last
7 years).

This country is ripe for a decent moral person with a steady gaze and
clear
eyes, and some degree of altruistic intention. Most of us have had quite
enough of the slick and oily power mongers who grow wealthier and more
smug
as the rest of us struggle to get by.

Our bridges and infrastructure are collapsing, oil is ridiculously high,
and
we are enmeshed in an expensive foreign nightmare with no end in sight.
People are losing their homes due to improper oversight of the banks, and
we
are paying and paying and paying for health care and necessary drugs to
stay
alive.

It's time for the "regular" people now. The fat rats and their toadies
can
run, but they won't win.

So tell the leaders of both parties. Jumping up on ur soap box may
feel good but believing the Dems are not as power mad as the GOP is
damn naive.

Of course you are right, because both parties consist of human beings with
all their faults and failings. There are those who would to anything to
win, even totally immoral things.

But in an overview, I would say that the republicans have traditionally been
the party of selfishness and personal gain and be damned to everyone else,
and the democrats are at least somewhat inclined to protect the least and
most vulnerable of our citizens.

I am going to just disagree with that. Frankly, I pause here and
there to avoid slipping into stronger comments. I believe that it is
my job to protect my family and do my job. It is your job to do for
yours. It is not our job to do squat for most of the rest. We should
provide them good schools, good teachers, open doors for jobs unbarred
by discrimination, places to save their money and take other measures
to insure we all have opportunity to compete.

I see the job is to make opportunities wide open to succeed or fail.
You and I started with nothing and had to fight like hell for what we
have. I, and I bet you also, have relatives who don't work, skipped
school and dropped out, and have taken predictable paths in life
involving crime, drugs and such. They are not our responsibility!
Always offer a hand up. Never a hand out.

I suppose that I might be described as having a more "mahayana" view,
Jim.... and that is why I am a democrat, even though there are admittedly
people with poor motivation in both parties.

I take a very Chinese orientation of Buddhism being but one leg of
philosophy for living. Family is first. Swartzenegger is kind of my
idea of what that means. He and his brother in law Kennedy lay aside
all the external issues for family. That is a very Chinese
perspective from Confucianism. I also try hard to hear the voices of
Tao and natue. Some balance with the rest of the world. I only need
enough space to live and prosper. I also believe, like many Buddhists
in Asia that we live alongside spirits who have lived as human in the
past. And I am certain about their existence from experience.

Our views are somewhat similar, especially regarding the tao and nature and the balance.....but coming from a tibetan perspective more so than chinese, I do believe in sharing more responsibility for other living beings. If I encounter a situation, then it is in my scope of concern, and I believe in taking care of me and mine first, but also think that there are those who have no family to give them that proverbial hand up. In that case, all the world and all people are my family, and I need to help in some small way if I can. There were kind people who helped me when I had nothing and no one, and I pass that on. If all I can offer are kind words, then I will give them. But I do think that some consideration needs to be in place, through laws and government, to care for those who don't have family, to do it for them.
