Broken Promises of the Democrat-controlled Congress

President Bush delivered his seventh State of the Union Address to our nation.
In his speech, the President reminded all of us what a great country
we live in -- and he talked frankly about the challenges facing
America.

But as I sat in the House Chamber and listened to his speech, I
couldn't help but reflect on the state of the Democrat-controlled
Congress. As President Bush spoke to the nation about the priorities
facing our country, it was clear that the Democrats have not lived up
to the promises they made to the country when they took over the
majority in Congress.

From raising taxes -- to increasing government spending by billions of
dollars -- the Democrats have broken their promises to the American
people and forfeited the mantle of change.

President Bush's speech focused on the issues that are of the greatest
concern to working families across the country -- improving our
economy, making energy more affordable, keeping our country secure and
improving our education and healthcare systems, to name a few.

But the Democrat-controlled Congress has chosen to ignore those issues
and put a priority on bashing President Bush and Republicans,
increasing taxes, and not reducing spending. Just take a look at their
record on the economy:

The Democrats have proposed a $1.3 billion dollar job-killing tax
that would be the single largest income tax increase in history.
This is a tax hike at a time when working families are already
dealing with high energy prices, home mortgages and cost-of-living
increases.

Even though the Democrats campaigned on fiscal responsibility,
they have added billions of dollars in pork-barrel spending that
our country can't afford -- including money to fund a sailing
school, an Exploratorium in San Francisco, and even $1 million to
build a Woodstock hippie museum.

Not only have they broken their promises on taxes and spending, they
have also not produced results on other key issues like Illegal
Immigration, fighting the war on terror, Homeland security, and the
War in Iraq.

We need your help today. The only way we can
keep America on track and protect the tax cuts, support the troops,
protect our borders, improve national security, remain competitive,
and sustain our nation’s economic growth and job creation is with your
personal help today.

That is why I’m emailing you today -- and why I must ask for your immediate
help to help our Republican candidates and put the Congress back in Republican hands.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Tom Cole, M.C.
Chairman
P.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat-controlled
Congress have shown time and time again their inability to govern and
offer workable solutions to the key issues facing America.
