Re: They should be tested

Like a lot of folks in this state, I have a job. I work, they pay me. I
pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In
order to get that paycheck, I am required to pass a random urine test
with which I have no problem. What I do have a problem with is the
distribution of my taxes to people who don't have to pass a urine test.
Shouldn't one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check because I
have to pass one to earn it for them? Please understand, I have no
problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do, on the other
hand, have a problem with helping someone sitting on their ***, doing
drugs, while I work. . . Can you imagine how much money the state would
save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check
? Pass this along if you agree or simply delete if you don't. Hope you
all will pass it along, though . . Something has to change in this
country -- and soon!

Sounds like a great idea on the surface. But there are often children involved. The most sick, twisted, damaged and vulnerable people out there are druggies, and nothing is more annoying than seeing a druggie who won't help themself, take handouts. But what is the alternative? Can you see them or their children starve? It is a complicated question.

I think that the handouts should be given, but only with conditions. More drug treatment programs are needed, and of course, the children should not be made to suffer for the parents addictions. I think that urine tests should be given just to document that this or that person has a problem, but not used in order to deny them help.

Alcohol is a legal drug, and many people have wrecked their lives, then managed to turn them around again with great effort and great cost through AA and other programs. Same for druggies. If they don't kill themselves first, they often finally come to a place where they realize that they need to save themselves.

Wouldn't it be smarter to find out WHY people use drugs and to help them get straight?
