I am trying to figure out what Republican voters want in a candidate.
 Since they
can't have Ronald Reagan, that is.

The republican are disparate just as the democrats. The religious and
anti abortion want Huckabee and not Guliani. The strong  defense folks
want McCain. The Auto workers want Romney. I think the anti crime
folks want Guliani The strongly fiscal conservative (me) are very
interested in Romney but not trusting enough yet, and of course the
balance is still all mixed up. We all want the 20th of January 2009
inauguration but I can wait. And don't bother to ask me why I think
the above, cause I wrote it without much thought and won't defend it
against strong objections. :-)

I have no objections.  You probably hit the reasons pretty well.
The Democrats, in spite of their differences, are far more in
tune with each other on Iraq and on the economy.  The question is
more of experience, leadership potential, etc.  The Dems are not
all over the map as the GOP candidates are.  Far closer to each other
than recent squabbles reveal.  That was apparent in last night's
debate when they had the luxury of actually discussing issues and
not just throwing out sound bites.  If the Republican field narrows
so such a debate is feasible among those left, I would like to
hear it as well. If it doesn't narrow down substantially then the
GOP nomination will be decided at the GOP convention.  That would
be kinda fun to witness.- Hide quoted text -

Not many that are old enough to remember the fun of a deadlocked
convention, especially a democratic party convention. Adlai Stevenson,
Alben Barkley and others. They were fascinating. I don't think it will
ever happen again. Too democratic.

Charlie

I well remember that convention in 1952 with Stevenson a candidate.
We did not have TV yet and a friend and I took our babies and spent
a week at my friend's mother's home to watch it on her TV.  We were
disappointed when he didn't win but I now think he probably would
not have made a very good President.- Hide quoted text -

Why. I thought that man was one of the most honest candidates I knew.
You would have loved my politics then, I was a devoted democrat.
