"Statins good for diabetes patients
Adam Cresswell, Health editor | January 12, 2008

CHOLESTEROL-LOWERING drugs called statins should be automatically
considered for nearly all patients with diabetes, after a study showed
the drugs cut heart attacks and strokes even in people with no prior
signs of heart disease.

Australian and British experts analysed the results of 14 previous
trials involving a total of 90,000 people, and found that over nearly
five years the number of deaths among the nearly 19,000 diabetes
patients fell by 9per cent for every one-unit drop in their level of
LDL, or "bad" cholesterol.

The drop was almost the same seen in the 71,000
non-diabetic patients, and applied equally to men
and women, and both main types of diabetes. Each
major cut in LDL cholesterol cut the numbers of
heart attacks, strokes and blocked arteries by 21
per cent in diabetic and non-diabetic groups."

Great news....

Careful. The operative word in all that
is................MAY. They hope we won't notice.

Absolutely, it's all a conspiracy. High blood
pressure and cholesterol through the roof are clearly
harmless. What the heck, if God had meant for us to
lower our blood pressure or cholesterol he would have
... well you know, done something about it. Hell, let
nature take it's course! Why would a smart fellow
like you be so foolish as to line the pockets of the
drug lords? Don't be a sucker. Keep up the good work.
Don't disappoint me now. (-8

Statin is good for the heart,
keeping it well and strong for loving...

I take statin too, but am a little concern because
Kaiser has sent word that it is replacing mine with a
cheaper generic.

If you look at the history of statins they go back to research done in
the 50's. In 1978 a US drug company (I forget which one) took over the
work done by a couple of Japanese researchers. It took them nine years
to get a drug to market, and I believe it was called Mevacor --
generic lovastatin. That was the first statin to hit the market. I
believe the patent has run out, and it is now literally as cheap as
aspirin -- $4 a month from Walmart. That's probably what Kaiser wants
you to take. I've been on lovastatin for several years, and on me it
works like gangbusters. My cholesterol was so low the last time it was
tested that Kaiser repeated the test to make sure it wasn't a mistake.
My wife was likewise on lovastatin, but on her it didn't work as well,
so her doctor switched her to Zocor, another one Kaiser seems to like.
For her, Zocor is more effective. Anyhow, the efficacy of particular
statins seems to vary from person to person. After you've been on the
new one for awhile, I would ask my doctor for a blood test. If the
numbers are up, ask to be switched to something else.
