(In my newspaper this morning. Take special note of the paragraph
I
have
bracketed below)
"The Wisdom of Crowds"
Crowding out" sounds like a bad thing. The Bush administration uses
that
fearsome term in denying recent requests by Louisiana, Ohio,
Oklahoma
and no
doubt other states to expand Medicaid to families not considered
poor.
Bush
argues that opening the government program to middle class people
would
prompt many to drop their private coverage.
Where's the problem?
I heard yesterday, either on PBS or on a network station, that
the
USA was far down the list on the effectiveness of its health care
though it had the most expensive health care at all. I took that as
a very cheerful sign that maybe Americans are waking up to reality.
Could this be the beginning of people looking for themselves,
instead of just accepting the pronouncements that the gurus of
their party of choice say is reality? Naw, now I've gone too far.
We can't hope for that much so soon.
I must say my health care under my Medicare Managed Care plan is
not expensive. In the last couple of days I've seen a GP,
then a specialist and filled three prescriptions --
had an ultra sound and a blood test -- and the entire cost was
about $65. I had the full attention of two good doctors and
members of their staffs. Some of us have lucked out under the
present system -- others have not. But I would be dishonest if
I complained about my own health care -- either the quality or
the cost. Of course it is only because of a government program -
Medicare -- coupled with a private insurer -- the managed care
program -- that I am so blessed.
Hillarycare?
I can't be sure they will be the same in the future, no. But
not just under Hillary. Medicare may be at risk, period.
The kind of coverage I have, however, is not available in all
areas of the nation. California has great choices, many other
states do not. New York had great choices as well and I did
look carefully at California's before deciding to move here.
I was not willing to give up my Medicare and managed care combo
for some great weather. We here in California are blessed.
I am sure you know Kaiser is only in a limited number of areas.
That's just it Rita. You understand that what you and I have probably
won't be available for long. You live in a good state for medicare.
I have a union that fights for my health benefits. We are among the
few however.

Part of the problem is the ignorance of physicians. They take shots at
things like off-label uses of medications. Then after buying the second
bottle, one mentions that it costs $13 a day for one morning dose. "Oh,
you don't need that." says he, changing the mode of attack and writing a
prescription that the drug store has to special order. Doctors should
get more feedback. Perhaps the drug rep, who brings lunch once month and
suggests how their drug is the swiss army knife of medicine, should
leave information for prescribing cost effectively. The replacement cost
$4 per day more in line with the other five.
we need the government to take control of health care. Why? Because the rest
of the time all you do is bitch about how bad the government handles things.
No we don't. That's the Republicans that whine. They don't believe
in government except when it's used to take away rights from the
people.
At least I agree with you on one thing. The government screws up EVERYTHING
it controls.
See what I mean? It's YOU who is always bitching about government.
We do however bitch about Bush's incompetency.
Thumper
Why do you think healthcare would be any different? What is it?
Do you think the word "healthcare" is a magic word that once it is uttered
in the right circles it will cause this great revelation and make government
become capable all of a sudden?
