Bill Clinton: George H.W. Bush will help President Hillary
ORANGEBURG, South Carolina (CNN) - Former President Bill Clinton said
Monday that the first thing his wife Hillary will do when she reaches
the White House is dispatch him and his predecessor, President George
H.W. Bush, on an around-the-world mission to repair the damage done
to
America's reputation by the current president -- Bush's son, George
W.
Bush.
Anyone foolish enough to snicker at Bill Clinton's political skills
ought to
remember that they were quite good enough to get most of his program
through
a reluctant Republican-controlled Congress. Those predisposed to sell
him
short ought to be prepared to dine on crow.
George Z.
In a statement sent to CNN Tuesday afternoon, former President Bush's
chief of staff Jean Becker said that he "wholeheartedly supports the
President of the United States, including his foreign policy. He has
never discussed an 'around-the-world-mission' with either former
President Bill Clinton or Sen. Clinton, nor does he think such a
mission
is warranted since he is proud of the role America continues to play
around the world as the beacon of hope for freedom and democracy. . .
."
Snicker.
You just might be a tad early snickering.
Or possibly not.
Let's wait and see what happens if a newly installed president gets on
the
phone to George HWB and asks him to do some international fence mending
for the nation with Bill Clinton.
What sort of "fence-mending"? To me, this is a massive straw man, this
"we
need to mend international alliances." Which ones?
Who said "alliances"? Not me. You have trouble understanding the English
I used?
OK, reputation. Next?
Now if you're talking about relations with other nations in the world that
have gone down the tube and which need mending, the list is huge.
Who? Please be specific as to who we need to mend "relations" with, why we
need to do that, what you think needs to be done, and why we need to deploy
former Presidents to do that.

Even Britain, which used to be in lock step with us, no longer is. They're
pulling their troops out of Iraq while we're still there; what's more,
their present prime minister no longer is one of our biggest fans or
supporters as his predecessor, Tony Blair, was.
*Brits: Strong relationship
*French: Got rid of the anti-American elitist. Pro-American leader. Best
relations for decades. From Sarkozy's speech to Congress:
"Friendship, first and foremost, means being true to one's friends. Since
the United States first appeared on the world scene, the loyalty between
the
French and American people has never failed. And far from being weakened
by
the vicissitudes of History, it has never ceased growing stronger." (...)
"But my generation did not love America only because she had defended
freedom. We also loved her because for us, she embodied what was most
audacious about the human adventure; for us, she embodied the spirit of
conquest. We loved America because for us, America was a new frontier
that
was continuously pushed back--a constantly renewed challenge to the
inventiveness of the human spirit." (...) "Together we must fight against
terrorism. On September 11, 2001, all of France--petrified with
horror--rallied to the side of the American people. The front-page
headline
of one of our major dailies read: "We are all American." And on that day,
when you were mourning for so many dead, never had America appeared to us
as
so great, so dignified, so strong. The terrorists had thought they would
weaken you. They made you greater. The entire world felt admiration for
the
courage of the American people. And from day one, France decided to
participate shoulder to shoulder with you in the war in Afghanistan. Let
me
tell you solemnly today: France will remain engaged in Afghanistan as
long
as it takes, because what's at stake in that country is the future of our
values and that of the Atlantic Alliance. For me, failure is not an
option.
Terrorism will not win because democracies are not weak, because we are
not
afraid of this barbarism. America can count on France." (...) "Allow me
to
express one last conviction: Trust Europe. In this unstable, dangerous
world, the United States of America needs a strong, determined Europe.
With
the simplified treaty I proposed to our partners, the European Union is
about to emerge from 10 years of discussions on its institutions and 10
years of paralysis. Soon it will have a stable president and a more
powerful
High Representative for foreign and security policy, and it must now
reactivate the construction of its military capacities."

*Germans: Got rid of the anti-American elitist. Pro-American leader. Best
relations for decades.
*EU in General: Moving strongly in a pro-American, pro-free market
direction. Gordon Brown said that there waas no question that "...France
and
Germany and the European Union are also moving more closely with
America."
*Eastern Europeans: Very pro-American. Willing to stare down the Russians
with us on the missile issue (whether that's wise or not is an entirely
different matter.)
*Canada: Pro-American government in place. Canadians have been taking a
disproportionate amount of the military load in Afghanistan.
*Austraila: Very supportive over the last 7 years. Baton passed form one
pro-American government to another.
*Middle East Oil Sheiks: Very supportive, currently investing in America.
100% supportive unless the the matter under discussion is Palestine or
Iraq.
*Libya: New relationships opened up
*Egypt: Improved relationships. Some democratic reforms, taking some
leadership in the mideast peace process that they've avoided since Anwar
Sadat.
*Japan: Very supporting. Starting to take on military load and
responsibilities they've avoided for decades.
*S. Korea: Pro-American, engaged in Afghanistan.
Wanna bet he doesn't say no? Think about what would happen if he
did.....the negative PR for a president who turned his back on his
nation's needs would be immense. After all, Clinton didn't say no when
George W. asked him to go with his daddy, did he?
Well, if they can get something done with Iran, Chavez, or Putin, that
would
be great.
I've been in over 20 countries working over the last three years. I talk
politics over drinks with our own employees all the time. They have no
problem with Americans or America or American policies outside of Iraq.
What
they don't like is Bush. When Bush goes, the problem goes. They
understand
that we can't just walk out of Iraq.
What Hilly is doing here is setting herself up for a PR coup. She plays
off
this myth (well perpetrated by poorly phrased polls, Chirac's
determination
to drum up anti-americanism to advance French power in the EU, and
Schroeder, who is now doing PR for Gazprom) that we are reviled abroad
for
reasons *other* than GWB and Iraq, pretends there's some massive problem,
and then takes credit when the problem fixes itself the day she hopes to
take office.
Typical Clinton politics, kind of like Bill listing welfare reform as one
of
the top achievements of his Presidency -- despite the fact that it was a
part of Gingrich's Contract with America, and he vetoed it twice before
he
finally signed it (causing a virtual revolt in his own Cabinet when he
did
so.)
Neither of these two familes, the Bushs or the Clintons, are good enough
for
America. Let's find somebody better.
