First you have to accept the premise of the existence of the Jewish or
Christian god and take it on faith that he chose to intervene in the
world by revealing his existence and rules to a small group of people
in a particular geographical part of the world at a particular time in
the hundred and thousands of years the human race had existed.
There's an odd divergence between Jews and Christians. Jews seem to rarely
believe in God, while Christians aren't Christian without belief. This
results in the odd situation where Christians, who somehow assign themselves
a role in facilitating The End Times, end up supporting the most secular
people on earth. I suppose that it is a mutual suicide arrangement.
One of my close friends is Jewish, but very resolutely
proclaims that he no longer is Jewish. I've argued that
it's great to be Jewish, because you don't have to be
religious and you automatically belong to a cool club.
I haven't pressed him, but maybe he was from one of
the "conservative" sects, and since he's gay, was
rejected by it and has rejected it himself in turn. I can't
think of any other reason anybody who's Jewish would
turn their back on it, except for social advantage as
Mahler did because he wanted to be conductor of the
Vienna Philharmonic, which as a Jew would have
been denied him despite that there was nobody else
nearly so worthy.
