assisted living!!

Randall - you wrote of this huge fear of some day, when really old,
having to live in an assised living home,etc.etc.
Randall - I would like to direct your attention to Rita's post, which
pretty much says it all, and also El Castor. Both advise you to direct
your attention to the here and now, rather than your fears of what might
be - some day - yet, it also mght not.
= = I live in a retirement community, which also has a next step, for
those who need it, into assisted living. Partly you are correct in that
some of the activities - even at my current level, which is NOT assisted
living - are absurd, and positively childish. But, one creates one's
own form of enjoyment and interests, even within the walls of the small
apartment one owns, or rents. Eventually, one does meet some people;
though socialization here takes place only within the groups; very
little private visiting, to my amazement. It is far from ideal - but it
is very safe; many services are offered, and maintenance is done for us,
we do not have to be responsible,etc.etc. N o choice - once one is old-
is ideal, and a compromise is required. This is safe, as I mentioned,
and I have few responsibilities, which I would find in no other
arrangement. Attached is also a medical center.
However, I am 90 years old, and am grateful that I am where I am -
despite the fact that I am not crazy about this place (for a whole bunch
of reasons), and I am happy to still be independent, more or less. I
lived by myself for almost eight years, after my husband died, and it
became very difficult, on many levels.
Close friends died,my health went downhill somewhat, and many other
considerations. I have lived here now for two years. were I still in my
house, I would have lots of problems - with care, safety,
loneliness,etc.etc.
However, you are so much younger, and I can only advise you to
thoroughly read Rita's and Jeff's post - especially Rita's; it is sound
advice; and if you continue to worry about what might be some day way in
the distant future, that future will come nearer and nearer, simply
because you worry too much.
The only other suggestion I might make is that, should you decide to some
day, indeed, move to a retirement living center , you could - even now -
put down a deposit which would reserve an apt. for you, and would be
refunded should you decide against it some day. There are many such
places; they are very competitive, and, IF living by yourself is not an
option, then these places are the best solution, until and unless you
become even more dependent and move into assisted living.
Meanwhile - enjoy!!!
Olly
