Islander - my compliment to you for a beautiful post - on religion -
atheism,etc.
I fully agree with all you stated, and I, too, feel myself, at times,
floating toward atheism ,instead of my "chronic' agnosticism. BUT - I
am satisfied being only an agnostic (like Einstein, I always say!!!)
simply because I am too lazy, too satisfied with my belief system, and
too old to work my way towad atheism- though the temptation is always
there!!
= = I do not, however, unlike you, feel that all people who "believe'
suffer from some form of laziness, for not studying the great possibiliy
that there might not be a "God" figure,etc.etc. I have had so many
experiences in my long life, knowing poor and uneducated people - very
good people - but simplistic, who never for a moment questioned their
faith, and, when suffering yet one more horrible strike of fate, it
merely caused them to cling to their belief in God, simply because He
must have a reason for having this happen to them; a reason, they tell
themselves, they do not understand, it is not revealed to them - but
they accept it. They neve question; questions would only destroy their
strength in maintaining some sort of equilibrium in face of sad, sad
circumstances.
Olly
