At 8:04 this evening, we had a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in San Jose, but people from Walnut Creek and Marin County have been calling the radio station saying they felt it. I and some of the people calling in on the radio felt it as coming in two shakers, about the same length, maybe five or ten seconds with two seconds between the two waves. It was long enough I was wondering how big it was going to get, and wondering more when it started up again. I haven't heard anyone reporting any damage, but I don't think I've heard any calls from San Jose yet.
It's the biggest earthquake I've felt since the 1989 earthquake, though it wasn't anywhere near as bad as 1989. Oh well, we don't have hurricanes or tornadoes so I guess we have to expect something.
I was living in Sunnyvale near San Jose at that time. IIRC the 89 quake was actually centered further south of San Jose. It is said to have hit SF because the wave was able to bounce arround that time. Perhaps this time the nature of the wave is not as likely to bounce. SF was greatly affected because it still has a lot of legacy architecture that is not earthquake hardened.
