There's an interesting dichotomy with our government, and perhapsYou do not go to war because you do not think they are a threat. You go to war because you believe they are a threat. When you do go to war, you never know in advance whether it will end up being a disaster or not a disaster. Only in hindsight do you know what will happen. And if you worry about the bad things that could happen when you go to war, you should NEVER go to war. Diito on the cost of war. You never know how much a war is going to cost you. No President can tell you how much that war is going to cost. Roosevelt certainly did not have the foggiest idea how much WWII would cost, or how much it would cost the United States to help the countries rebuild after the war. Perhaps if he did, he may have made the decision that the United States should not have gone to war...who knows....
others. Historically, I think you could make the case that our
government typically only responds effectively after a crises has
already occurred, hence the term "government by crises". If you
believe that then it's not hard to believe that our type of system
could, perhaps, result in our destruction someday.
On the other hand, though, we worried so much about a future (non-
existent) threat from Iraq, we started a preemptive war with
disastrous results that's estimated to wind up costing $2 trillion and
only made things worse. Go figure.
