My policy is never to "open" email attachments directly unless
they're just picture files, usually ".jpg" format, or unless they're
just text files with an extension such as ".txt" that I open with
Notepad, not with Word or any other program that would
execute any code that might be in them. Often people send me
attachments with the extension ".eml" for "email", which I won't
open under any circumstances. If I might have any interest in
an ".eml" attachment at all, I'll "save" it rather than open it.
Then I'll change the extension to ".txt" so I can look at it with
Notepad. If it looks like a picture, I might strip off the garbage
in front and run it through UUDECODE to see if I can get the
picture. If I can't decode the picture or read the text, then I'll
just skip it, maybe sending a message back to the sender that
I wouldn't open it because it was too dangerous.
