Dentistry in Mexico

With only modest research you can find world class people in Mexico
doing dental work with the best equipment and to vastly better
standards than what i have experienced in the US... for about 20% the
usual cost in the US.

I am spending $2,000 for work estimated at $5,000 or more in the US at
a dental school, and about $20,000 at the high end private dentists..
the caps are going in straight, comfortably and below the gum line to
replace a few I had in the US that were on sideways.

costs
root canal's 180 dlls, caps about the same in porcelin, add $200 in
gold. cleaning 30 dollars, laser whitening $395... other whitening
190. with the root canals they fit pins into the root canal that
extend to secure the crown... costs can be much less at the places
catering to non americans. For some of us there is a time and place
for that approach as well.

One lady arrived in need of $38,000 in dental work (US estimate)
implants, bone grafts etc. she will get it done in mexico for maybe
$8,000 to $10,000. (or in india from what i can gather for a lot
less).. no way she could afford any of that in the US... mostly the
civil servants can afford that...not too many of us tax payers.

Most of the border towns sport 4 or 5 dental clinics on each block....
some dirt cheap and run down, seen by the natives with few resourses.
Others the best you will find anywhere (with waiting rooms full of
returning and very satisfied US customers).. a little time in the
chair with some of these will prove the point. dont expect high
class real estate though, its all pretty funky.... clean and new on
the inside of much of it though...full of world class equipment.

Most cost effective is to stay for a week at a time. hotel cost 35
dlls a night, nice clean hotel room.. new tile, carpeting, ultra
clean....good security. Amtrak if you have the time is cheap. $100
round trip from much of the US. cab to the hotel 5dlls....
restaurants about half of US prices.

********

If I were arriving cold Id get a hotel then ask the better looking
drug stores for references on the best dentists in the area...then
take the concensus opinion.

Then Id start with some minor work to see how it shakes out...Id look
for waiting rooms predomninantly full of middle class americans...
conversation fills you in on the rest.

You will need a translator, or be very proficient at hand waiving and
sign language. My dentists in mexico (the regular one and the guy
who specializes in problem root canal work) both speak fluent
english. the staff babes dont though... its a much more casual
atmosphere than in the US..no posing, or high pressure sales etc.
