There was a time, back in 1972 when I decided to quit the job treadmill and
write the great American novel. We rented out the house in Denver, bought an
old Terry trailer, packed up the kids with home schooling materials and
headed to Mexico to write the ultimate novel of Aztecs, Mixtecs, Olmecs and
Gringos. We lived on rice, beans, chiles, veggies, tortillas and salsas for
about six months when the money ran out and we headed back to the 'normal'
life. I think we did it on about five dollars a day for the four of us, from
huevos rancheros in the morning to bolillos and beans at night. We were
healthy and strong... and still are with meats only once or twice a week in
moderation. The five a day is based on todya's inflation.
Anybody else?

Right on , Wayne !
I am retired, I am not poor, and I can afford to buy anything I want
to
eat.... That being said, I have been spending less than $21 a week
for
myself (only) for the last 5 years. It has been no hardship at all, I
just have
a fairly healthy lifestyle.
Here's the typical fare for me:
Lots of green vegetables, cukes, tomatoes, fruit. Meat is usually
chicken
(at 39c USD per pound) or fish (about $1.50 USD per pound) with
occasional
ground beef ( about $1.30 USD per pound), and maybe a quarter to a
half
pound once a day.
Rice, beans, soups, noodles, spaghetti, macaroni, Ramen soups,
pork and beans, weiners ( 59c USD per 12 ounces), salami ( $1 USD
for 16 ounces)...... but not in such abundance to overdo it on
calories.
If you look at a TV dinner, you can see that they have around 300
calories.
Here, there are various types with infinite variety, with prices from
63c USD to
about $1.50 USD for the "designer" stuff like "Lean Cuisine" , which
soccer
moms like. I rarely try them. Usually it's when Joanie buys a couple
and
tries one and doesn't like it. She would normally just chuck the
others in
the trash, but , sincy I cannot abide waste, I'll eat it myself. This
doesn't
happen often tho.
While I do have a garden, which produces more than I can consume, I
am
not basing my costs on the garden produce, which has reduced my
spending
to under $10 a week while it is in production....
Now, for my wife, it is another story. She likes steak, seafood,
shrimp, and
turns up her nose at any meat that costs under $5 USD per pound. It's
OK
with me ---- she buys HER groceries for herself and I buy MY groceries
for
my self. Her costs go about $80 a week on the average, but that
includes
laundry soap and things like that. Plus, she eats in restaurants at
least
5 - 6 times a week (in addition to the $80). I never eat out, for
many
reasons...(Good seed for another thread, that )
Incidentally, I am healthy as hell. Joanie has every imaginable
ailment, mostly
diet related, from GERD to diarrhea...... and is overweight ( but
still cute as
a bug :>))) )
I have a 38 inch waist, and , while classified as "overweight" am
working
diligently to get back to "normal", which means I need to lose about
15 lbs.....
to get my BMI back down to 25......It will take me another month.....
So, the $3 a day thing is , not only very practical, but makes me
shake my
head in wonder at the dietary habits of those who spend like my wife
does....
It may have something to do with the area where a person lives as
the price
of food varies all over the place. Where my son lives. 70 miles north
in
Collin county just north of Dallas , a
cantalope costs $3 USD.... Here, in Navarro county, it costs about $1
USD
So, maybe we have to make an allowance for the local prices.....
But, as YOU found out, if you shop wisely, you can easily gain
weight on
$3 USD a day.... Those who say it is impossible are probably not very
healthy in the first place....
And that's the truth !
Andy in Eureka, Texas
Andy, your wife has some deal! My husband is definitely a bit spoiled where food is concerned. I am a very good cook and he enjoys it a lot.....:-)
If you ever decide to ditch that freeloader, my wife and I are looking for a good wife.
LOL! He really does his share around here. Property maintenance is a biggie. Takes care of cars and does all the dog walking too. My main chores are cooking and laundry, but he helps occasionally with those too.
