I wrote the Information office of a large National Park in Hawaii
because I noticed that the name of the Park was spelled spelled
Hawai'i. and I received this response:

Mr. Pig,

We are with the program. We prefer to use the spelling "Hawai`i" as it
is closer to the way it is pronounced by native Hawaiians, our hosts
in these islands. Many are unaware of this and so use the americanized
spelling "Hawaii." On the other hand, "Hawaiian" is an american
english word so would not use the `okina.

Neither spelling is incorrect. I hope this helps,

Note that the Park employee spelled Americanized, American and
English with small letters. He also referred to native Hawaiians as
"our hosts" Is there a secessionist movement afoot over there? What is
'okina?

yup...you guessed it:

In broad strokes and simplistic terms, the natives - those of Hawaiian
blood - would like at minimum status somewhat akin to that of the Navajo
Nation. Jerry or Alvin, I'm sure, can explain in more detail.

And as far as "okina" is concerned...

Which reminds me of the old joke of yesteryear, when Hawaii was not the
tourist mecca it now is:

A visitor on the flight over to Hawaii overheard the couple in the row ahead
arguing. He said ,"It's pronounced 'Ha-why-ee'." She said, "No, it's
pronounced 'Ha-vy-ee'." The argument goes on the entire eight hour plus
flight. The visitor, now curious, as soon as he checks into his Waikiki
hotel goes out on Kalakaua Avenue and accosts the first tanned, native
looking fellow he sees. "Excuse me," he says, "but exactly how do you
pronounce the name of this place? Is it 'Ha-why-ee' or is it 'Ha-vy-ee'?"
"Well," sayd the tanned one, "it's 'Ha-vie-ee', of course." "Thank you very
much", says the visitor. Says the tanned one, "You're velcome!"
