Can't decide if continuing as before in the face of such vehemently
expressed negativity is worthwhile or not. The all too human temptation
to say the hell with them and let them kill that goose is strong. Blair
is so unpopular, both at home and in the rest of Europe, that it's
unlikely that his warning will be heeded. The ball's in our court.
The anti-Americanism is mainly anti-Bush, the same
feelings are not felt for somebody like Clinton.
However
The credibility of the US has progressively
fallen because of its misuse of power not its
mere use. The nation is not leading since
too few are following. The US is not a reliable
broker in middle east because it has taken
sides to the extent it is part of the problem.
Nor is the degree of its power evident except in a military sense.
The conflicts of WWII were clearly resolved in
several years but the US has not been able
to impose its will in the Korean War, the
Vietnam war nor yet in Iraq and Afghanistan.
We don't even contemplate occupying
Iran and forcing them to fully bend to our will.
Castro was allowed to go his way and
South America is doing that now. Some
nations will continue to thumb their nose
and not behave as we think they should.
Power is often an illusion. Each time
you fill your gas tank you realize that
is true.
