I'll never forget my first trip to a Latin country (Puerto Rico thirty years ago). My most compelling memory is that of eight-foot high walls studded on top with broken glass completely surrounding every house, and iron bars on every window. Not sure I'd want to live that way. And I wasn't touring the barrio.
