Re: Five items you should never repair

I'd add VCRs, if anyone else is still using them. Some years ago, I
bought the top of the line JVC which had a jog-shuttle wheel and was
just the thing for editing video. Then the remote control died. I
took it back to Circuit City and asked that they call me if the repair
would be over $40. I didn't hear from them for several weeks, then
got a post card informing me that my new remote control had arrived.
Bring $187 and pick it up. So I decided that henceforth, all my VCRs
would be cheap and disposable. That worked fine until recently when a
couple of VCRs bit the dust and I bought two Zeniths that were about
$55 each. They remind me daily that sometimes dirt cheap is not the
best choice. I'm too cheap to kill them while they're still working,
but when they die, I will definitely take them out in the back yard
and use them for target practice.

Yes. I include VCRs in the transistorized stuff under $100USD.
Around here they cost about $30 . I think I have about 3 currently
working OK, and maybe 6 stacked up in my workshop that I keep
around for hobby parts.. ( retired EE and ham operator )...

I spent the better part of my life designing and building stuff both
as a profession as a hobby. --- a real 16hour/day 7day/week sort
of nerd. NOW, it is cheaper to buy something than even to buy
the case to put some home project in..... I'll fix TVs and computers,
but the other stuff gets scrounged......

Heck, I'm even getting too lazy to do brake jobs anymore....(almost)

I don't think this "disposable" society is a good thing, since it
doesn't encourage the kids to get their hands dirty,. They all
want to be managers with good salaries so the can buy new stuff....

End of rant.
