Thousands of genes behave differently in the same organs of males and
females, researchers reported on Friday, a finding that may help
explain why men and women have different responses to drugs and
diseases.

I thought about this when I read that no studies about the effects
of statins had been done solely with women. Yet statistical data
suggests that women are not subject to the same risks of high
cholesterol as men. Since many powerful drugs have some
serious side effects, it is important that the relation between taking
statins in the prevention of heart attacks be studied in women.
I suppose it is understandable that men should be studied because
they do have more heart attacks at earlier ages. But statins are
prescribed across the board to both women and men and it may
well be that for women the benefit is very, very slight, if any and
the sideeffects, however, the same.
