funny.... But it shows that when you have no more "sticks" and are not
willing to provide some rewards, it's really hard to get good behavior
through diplomacy. Even China is treating N. Korea's refugees
terribly. And so does Japan. If those refugees were sending a lot of
money back home to Korea, then perhaps N. Korea might see the need to
placate those countries. It also might make sense for the north to
normalize relations with south korea so that neither country would
need to maintain such large armies and we could get out of Korea.
I watched two supposed experts on the Korea situation on Charlie Rose's
show today, Donald Gregg, former US Ambqassador to South Korea, and
Wendy Sherman, Former advisor to Clinton on North Korea. They agreed
that the Korean ruler is attempting to get the attention of the US to
indicate that they are important enough to have bi-lateral talks with
us. He really doesn't care about his people and has been willing to
let millions starve already. One said his rule is more like that of a
cult leader. Both agreed that the problem can probably be solved by
negotiation and disagreed with hard liners who say, just take him out.
They said that this would result in so many refugees in China that Hu
will do a great deal to avoid that.
So, the solution to the recalcitrant Chinese to actually take a firm postion
against North Korea's nulcear ambitions is to allow the situation to fester,
thereby increasing the pressure on China, who don't want more North Koreans
coming into their country.....
Perhaps it's about oil. We would want the Chinese to offer cheap oil
to N. Korea as a bagaining tool? The N. Korean economy seems starved
for energy.
