We know about all the really big ones that are in stable
earth-crossing orbits, but even little ones can do a lot of
damage. And what about something that just got knocked
out of the Asteroid or Kuiper Belts or Oort cloud and is
heading toward us for the first time? Earth is a tiny
target compared to Jupiter, but nevertheless, that plume and
earth-sized cloud of disturbance on Jupiter after it was
hit by a big comet a few years back does give one
something to think about.
I found a list of the big Kuiper Belt objects found so
far. One of them seems to be bigger than pluto.

Larger still than Pluto and the newly discovered Kuiper
Belt object is Neptune's moon Triton, whose orbit
around Neptune is anomalously retrograde, inclined far
from the usual plane of the planets and large moons
in the solar system, and in an unstable orbit which is
spiraling toward Neptune such that it will collide with
the planet on a time scale very short compared to the
time scale of the solar system. Many people suspect that
Triton is a captured Kuiper Belt object.
Thanx for the links. These are very interesting. The impact
of these large objects are at the poles. Am just wondering
if the weak magnetic field is enough to divert the objects
to earth. You would think that the gravity was the weak
force that diverted the object. But maybe it just has to be
on a collision path to strike the earth?
Just remember that there is a 23 degree tilt involved, North
Pole inclined to sun. Since this was 4 am this is not critical,
the impact was Earth plowing along the orbit running into the
outward bound meteor.
and the mag pole is over in Canada.
Well 4am indicates that the meteor might have just missed the earth.
The point of impact is just on the northern limb of the earth. And
Canada would be closer to the meteor at the time of impact. Maybe
there was a lot of metal in the meteor and days out from the earth,
the weak magnetic field was just enough to pull in the meteor?
That crossed my mind too.
Small clarification, by "That crossed my mind" I was referring only
to "might have just missed the earth". I've mentioned elsewhere
my skepticism that magnetism would have much effect on a large
object.
If so, that's an event in itself. It's
very rare for something to enter the earth's atmosphere and
have enough momentum to leave the atmosphere without
crashing to the ground. The only other one I've heard of is
something about 30 years or so ago that was plainly visible in
full daylight streaking across the sky from New Mexico to
Canada. Although a photo can be very misleading, the streak
in the photo for the Norwegian event doesn't look very
dramatic. That might of course just mean it was very high up.
especially if it managed to leave the atmosphere after entering.
Yes. I got that point the first time you posted. But the small streak
is disappointing. Perhaps only a small piece broke off and burnt up.
Hope that more is reported as the location of the impact is
investigated.
