Now there are significant risks to having lots of
CO2 deep under water under pressure. Look up the volcanic
lakes in Africa which have a triggering event that sends
clouds of CO2 to the surface killing everything around the
shore and up to 50 feet higher in elevation.
There has been some comment about the sudden release of
large amounts of methane from the methane hydrates existing
in the ocean. This has not occurred within the last several
hundred thousand years since no large methane concentrations
have been detected in ice core samples. But it might have
occurred in other times.
There is actually evidence that we do have the methane hydrate
erruptions.
There are several locations in the continental margins that
appear to have signs of massive underwater disturbances.
There are two forms of methane deposits stability.
A cold location will have the hydrates freeze out in the shallow
waters of the Arctic -- a warming would release these from what
amounts to oce3anic permafrost.
Deep ocean sources are down around 1000 feet and result from
pressure stabilizing in the cold deep waters. They are highly
sensitive to shock. And explosion or earthquake can trigger the
transformation into gas.
Since these are found in most continental margins they
constitute a potential hazard to shiping. There have been
several instances of ships being suddenly lost in clear weather.
One idea is that an underwater hydrate mass shifted to gas. As
the mass reached the surface it would form a massive froath,
with overall density under 30 pounds/cuft. This is too small to
support a passing ship so the vessel would sink in seconds.
We do not have to have all the methane in the world transition
at once, small areas of only a few sqmi at a time would be
unnoticeable in the mass of CH4 emitted by bacteria and leaking
oil seeps.
