This article indicates that the economics of a worldwide switch to
ethanol or flex fuel vehicles will be complex. Countries such as
Brazil will increase in importance and oil producing countries such as
Bolivia will have less influence. Global warming advocates should be
happy because of the decrease in air pollution. Farmers around the
world will celebrate.

It seems to me that the US problem is that we have developed ethanol
using corn. Brazil's sugar cane is 5X more effective. Can we switch?
Should we?

I would imagine that we could grow sugar cane here but perhaps not in the
quantity that Brazil grows it. I found a few links for American sugar
cane/beets on Google, there are more:

My opinion is that we should make every effort to try and supplement our
fuel supply with ethanol ASAP to cut down being in hock to others. We
should also ask the Brazilians for advice on how they handled the matter,
trying very hard to not get tangled in the NIH (Not Invented Here) problem.
