When we buy stuff in Oaxaca, it is usually from Wal-Mart and most of that
stuff comes from China. And for food stuff we go to the local market
which
one would think sold locally produced goodies such as tomatoes, avocados
and
the like. But not so. Most stuff in the local markets came from huge
plantations up and down the coast and into Chiapas, was freighted into
Mexico City to the Central de Abastos (Centrl supply station) then sent
to
all the smaller cities and towns around the country. So some of the so
called local color and flavor has disappeared even in this delightful
garden
of Eden. We are about five blocks from the Seven Cultures, for those of
you
who know Oaxaca.

I spent two months in Oaxaca studying Spanish in 1991. The language
school was in a beautiful old mansion located not far from the long
distance bus depot. I wonder if it is still there.

Mornings were three hours of Spanish conversation, no English allowed,
and afternoons I took a cooking class given there by a Oaxacan woman -
she took us to the market on a couple of occasions.

I certainly would recommend a stay in Oaxaca.

My sister-in-law is a concert violinist. She traveled the world from her
Bainbridge Island home and just last year invested in a new home just a half
mile from the bus station you mention. We helped out by buying two bedrooms
for whenever my wife and I travel into Mexico, and Oaxaca is kind of a
central location for a lot of what I like doing - anthropology. I have
written 17 novels with prehistoric Mexico as my focal point. So my wife and
I flip between Oaxaca and the US after giving the cruise ships a try...
bored to death after the third cruise. Too many gringos that claim to have
an interest in Mexico but who fall asleep the second minute into sharing my
life about Mexico. So I can't even share Mexican culture to people going to
Mexico to learn Mexican culture... or just get drunk with Tequila and XX.

I was in Oaxaca at Easter time and weekends a youg man with a van
offered students at the language school excursions to surrounding
villages. We went to one on Good Friday, to see the procession to the
crucifixion emulated, and I will never forget it. Along with Monte
Alban we also visited several smaller archeological sites in the area.

I also liked visiting San Cristobal de las Casas and my favorite
archeological site was Palanque. At San Cristobal a group went to a
nearby village where the people pretty much run things for themselves
and keep official Mexico at bay. We visited a church which combined
a type of Catholicism with pagan elements. The people left offerings
of Coca Cola and cigarettes.

Mexico has a rich culture which most tourists never experience in
their jaunts to Cancun and other resorts. I also visited several
colonial cities north of Mexico City and they were quite magnificent.

When I was attending the language school I stayed at the Hotel
California nearby. Pleasant little hotel with a good and cheap
restaurant. Then I moved into the home of a Mexican widow for
a time so I could cook my own food, having tired of eating out.
