USA records largest drop in annual deaths in at least 60
years Updated 4/19/2006 4:14 PM ET
ATLANTA (AP) - In what appears to be an amazing success for
American medicine, preliminary government figures released
Wednesday showed that the annual number of deaths in the
U.S. dropped by nearly 50,000 in 2004 - the biggest decline
in nearly 70 years. The 2% decrease, reported by the
National Center for Health Statistics, came as a shock to
many, because the U.S. is aging, growing in population and
getting fatter. In fact, some experts said they suspect the
numbers may not hold up when a final report is released
later this year.
What is so hard to understand.
If you look at the demographics breakdown by age you will notice
a block of people with small numbers -- the children born during
the Depression. On either side you have large bocks of
population -- the children of the 20s and the Baby Boomers.
In all the previous years you have had a larger population
moving into the elderly high mortality decades, so death rates
would increase.
We are seeing a smaller pop move into those years, so naturally
the death rate would decline.
This has been the story of commercial growth for the whole post
WW2 era.
As an age cohort moves into a time of their life there are
massive growths in the industries associated with that age.
Baby supplies, public schools, colleges, housing, (more
childrens items), then once their children are grown, nest egg
investments with too many dollars chasing stocks up (the Clinton
years), and coming soon: liquidating those investments for
retirement with the resulting continuous price depression from
oversupply.
