I agree. A cheap desktop like Dell is good. But I think that a larger
screen is better. I have a flat CRT of 15 inches. It's so much
brighter and better than the 13 inch screens that I have had. Never
did like the huge desk space that large screens use. But now I really
appreciate not having to switch to reading glasses to read the text. I
can even read with a little effort with no glasses.

My new Dell desktop came today -- and I could not be more pleased
with it. It has a 17 inch flat screen monitor. The computer is fast
and has a huge hard drive -- 145 gigabytes. I was able to network
it to my ailing laptop and move over the files I wanted to keep from
that computer. The laptop is connected to a wireless router and the
desktop is connected to a port on the back of the router.

This computer is so sleek and space saving -- I bought a Dell desktop
new in 2000 and it was enormous in the size of the monitor and even
the keyboard was larger and clunkier. This is a far superior machine
and cost $300 less than I paid in the year 2000. This one will give
me everything I want and need for what I use a computer for.

A three year warranty for in home service calls was part of the
package, but buying it through Costgo also gave a six month
unconditional guarantee to be able to return it for any reason --
not that I want to return it:)

I got my Compaq from Costco about 8 years ago, but IIRC it didn't have
that warranttee. So I guess they realized that many more would buy
with that assurance. Great machine that you have. Don't think that you
will need a new one for a long time. I still don't feel that I need to
replace my 8 year old desktop, although a great and cheap portable
notebook might change my mind. For example, I like this RFID
technology and I can see where portables will do a lot of work. One
day you might be able to just set one down in a warehouse and
inventory the whole place very quickly.

I would not have replaced the six year old Dell desktop I had in New
York had I not moved but shipping it to the
West Coast was not an option I chose. I needed a laptop for the
move and got one from a daughter. Before I left, I gave the desk top
to a grandson who wanted a computer with a CD burner. I wiped the
hard drive and reinstalled Windows and started him out fresh with some
software. It did need that reinstallation of the OS and I would have
done it for myself had I kept the computer. XP is a far better OS
than WinME.

I don't think you would much like a cheap laptop. Some family have
some very expensive state of the art laptops and they are
great, but one like the Dell I was using was very slow. I am glorying
in the speed of my new computer. I would insist on trying out a
laptop before buying it.

My first computer was a Compaq and when it had problems I had to
box it up and ship it out of state to be repaired. Dell sends a tech
to your home. Dell replaced a faulty CD burner on my desktop --
very nice service. They gave me a better burner than on my original.

Yes. I have a friend who paid more for a Dell for the service and
warranttee. He offered it for sale to me when he left the islands, but
I declined it for the age of the machine of windows 2000. However,
I've had second thoughts because the machine really did have good
software on it even if he never really used all the features. IIRC the
Dell tech might even have installed all the software he bought at the
same time as he bought the machine. He had got the stuff on his
machine for an MBA course of study. All his software worked nicely
together. He never had the problems I have with the chop suey mixture
of programs that I use. Sometimes it has malfunctioned on the
installation of a new program. Anyway, I think that you have gotten a
good deal on the desktoop.
