IIRC you can still use an external HD. It would probably be a little
slower, and the laptop wouldn't be as portable then. It's nice not to
have to pay for an ISP for internet service. I would really be tempted
to use wi fi if we had more wi fi here. It seems to be imminent
though. The City of Honolulu has started networking traffic and
surveilence cameras all over the island. And they've offered free
access for govt information. I live on an intersection, and if they
offered me free ISP account in exchange for putting a camera and
transmitter on my roof, I'd gladly take that.

But you do have to pay for Internet service via wi fi. Unless there
is an unsecured wireless computer broadcasting its signals within
range of your computer. Then you can piggy back on. For
example, I see three wireless networks listed as within range of
my computer, two are secured and the one that is not shows such
a weak signal as to be useless. However most are securing their
wireless networks with router and password. You can't count
on finding a free connection within range.

Yes it would be nice if the City would have unsecured spots in parks,
etc. I would rather use a laptop out doors for that comfort. We're all
taxpayers and the cost of an account is not too expensive since the
City plans to build the network anyway. You might consider it to be
public service if the hardware is there and available. Probably the
local cable company might complain for the competition. That's the
largest ISP right now-- about 70% of the homes here have cable
service.

You can use wireless computers free in many libraries, parks, coffee
houses, airports and some cities are providing free wi fi in many,
many settings.

But I pay for my cable connection -- the advantage really is that I
can move the computer around the apartment without wires. But
I live in so small a space, that is not really a great advantage. It
is an advantage in households with more than one computer --
they can share a connection and in larger houses you can move your
laptop around the house as you please.

Most of the new homes now have this low voltage Cat 5 wiring for a
home network. It's real cheap to install it within the house under
construction, and I suspect it's much faster and convenient to modify
for computers, cameras, security alarms, lights and garage doors etc.
In comparison, all those services would be difficult to implement with
just a wireless network. For example, one system is neat because you
can switch the picture from a camera at the door to your TV, and talk
to the delivery man. Then watch him as he drops of the package just
inside your door after you've unlocked it.
