I agree. A cheap desktop like Dell is good. But I think that a larger
screen is better. I have a flat CRT of 15 inches. It's so much
brighter and better than the 13 inch screens that I have had. Never
did like the huge desk space that large screens use. But now I really
appreciate not having to switch to reading glasses to read the text. I
can even read with a little effort with no glasses.

If need be you can increase the font size in Firefox with Control and
then +

Make it as large as you like.

Same goes with Thunderbird for Email.

Great. Now I can read the text without my reading glasses. But it
feels funny not to have glasses. Maybe I'm too used to using them.

Forget about laptops, they're convenient but I don't like the strain
of reading text, and the problems of increasing the font size just to
get a readable screen. I really hate it when my nephew used to visit
and checked his email on my screen. He defaulted all the settings to
tinny winny icons that I can barely make out. Had a rough time
restoring the settings when I need a magnifying glass to read the help
instructions. Now he brings his own laptop to check his email.

Laptops are great when you need the portability. Ideally, one would
own a desktop and a lightweight
wireless notebook. I have had to increase text
size on my browser with Firefox's Control and +. I hated the keyboard
at first, but have become used to it.

One arrangement that I've lusted over in the past is the docking
station-- like Toshiba laptops which can slip in and be used for a
keyboard with a desktop machine. But then when the salesman lets you
lift the laptop, I find that five pounds is just too much to carry
arround. I'd like to wait until the the laptop becomes more portable.
What's the point of having a portable if you don't want to carry it
arround? Another thing I don't like about laptops besides the weight
is the tinny winny knobs it uses for a mouse. And some even have these
small mouses. I guess I would have to use a normal size mouse.

However, I find that I like the stylus on my Palm. I carry my Palm
wherever I go. My friends prefer the Blackberry for the email feature,
but I don't think that I could ever get used to the small text of the
screen. Even now I need my reading glasses to see the Palm text. It
would be great if a portable would be the size of a small writing
tablet and the user could input text directly with a stylus on the
screen. I hope Palms will start growing up in size to a laptop. Palm
could probably make a laptop model that would be a lot cheaper than
those that desk top makers sell.

I don't know how to break this to you, but these days the minimum
screen size to consider is 17". In an LCD, the better ones are 19".

This laptop keeps limping along, turning itself off sporadically,
and I hope it manages to not give up the ghost until my new Dell
arrives.

By the way, I understand that although I won't need my wireless router
for the new laptop there is a way to plug into it and use it for
security if not for wireless.

Yes. It's too bad that it's so expensive to fix laptops. But it seems
a great convenience for house guests to use the laptop with the
wireless router in the living room to check their email. You could
just stick the laptop in a drawer when it's not in use.
