Interestingly only steerage passengers actually ever made it to Ellis
Island. The ships would first dock at Manhattan "the North River" or
Jersey and 1st and second class passangers would be processed aboard.
The steerage passangers were loaded onm barges and brought to Ellis
Island.

I've been to Ellis Island about 20 times although I'm mongrel and
could never trace my ancestors back.

That's an interesting commentary. Although I was born in NYC, I've never
been to Ellis Island.
However, I do have a copy of the passenger manifest (bearing the names of my
mother and father) of the vessel which carried my parents to the new world
in 1920. My comments on what the process was at the time was based on what
my parents told me about it when I was old enough to understand.
