The virus, which has spread in recent months from Asia to Europe and
Africa, was found Saturday at a farm of more than 11,000 turkeys in
southeastern France. It has spread to 20 new countries in the past
month.
Health experts in the Bahamas are also investigating the possibility
the virus may be responsible for a spate of flamingo deaths on the
southern island of Inagua in the last couple of days. Yesterday, Niger
ordered a cull of all poultry in areas hit by bird flu and said it was
stepping up checks across the rest of the semi-desert country to try to
stop the disease from spreading.
Veterinary chiefs meeting in Paris yesterday said it is "highly likely"
the disease will continue to spread to poultry stocks in Europe and
beyond.

Massive bird deaths in the Bahamas are being tested today
for presence of the flu virus.
Note house cats have died in Europe from probably eating
infected birds. However there is no recorded case of
cat to human transmission.
Yet. I was floored when I saw that it had passed to a cat. A cat? The
next question is when does the bird flu arrive on the US mainland.
In Asia some big cats (one tiger at least) died from bird flu. So cats
can get it. Dogs? The is some doubt, some say no, not yet.
Only one cat has died in Europe and people are being told to keep
their cats inside.
Next, the possible appearence in the Bahamas is a surprise but maybe
some birds cross the Atlantic from Africa into the Caribbean. If so
the disease will appear in Florida and the southern East coast first.
The other pathway is through Siberia and Alaska and that might have to
wait until the birds of that region fly south next fall. But if this
pathway occurs, a lot of birds in the north will get it first.
In Europe it is coming in from Africa and/or the East Europe.
