Re: Whites are Fleeing

I posted the wsj link a couple of weeks ago and got a few writeups in
the edu message boards. Here is one sent to the wsj author:

Dear Suein Hwang,

I am a former parent of Monta Vista High students. I strongly disagree
with some of the implications expressed in this article regarding Monta
Vista High School not preparing kids for the outside world and
socialization to mainstream America. My kids are quite well adjusted
to their college environment and thriving. Asian kids tend to stay out
of trouble and become extremely successful, well educated, and well
adjusted in adult life compared to the normal population. However life
is never perfect and there are the exceptions. I feel that it is not
practical to cram everything into 12 hears of schooling. One must
decide whether it is more important for their kids to have a balanced
education or to stress high academic achievement in preparation for
their future endeavors.

The world is becoming much more global and competitive with other
countries where competitive education is the norm. Many of our top
university graduate schools are dominated by foreign born students or
students of Aisian American descent as an example of the benefits of
competitive education. Many of our top scientists and engineers are
also foreign born or are of Asian American descent. If the US is to
keep up with the rest of the industrial world in the near future there
must be some schools of lower learning which stress competitive
education where emphasis for high achievement is the norm. Monta Vista
High and Lynbrook High are far from the normal America school. I feel
that parents who want a more rounded education for their kids should
sent their kids to more normal school of which there are a great
abundance.

Europe has the right idea. They have trade schools and university
bound schools. The brighter students have the opportunity to attend
the university bond school and must take very competitive entrance
exams while the others go to the many trade bound school. In essence
Fremont Union High School District in Cupertino offers kids such a
choice, unofficially of course. Fremont High School which has a less
competitive environment and more emphasis on thing like sports as
pointed out in the article is such an example. It is not necessary to
turn Monta Vista High and Lynbrook High into another ordinary schools.
They serve a very useful, and I feel necessary purpose, one in
extreamly short supply here in America.

There should be a few schools like them in every school district to
give very bright and high achieving students more opportunities to
excel and parents more choices. They most certainly prepare high
achieving student with a very good and competitive learning environment
and prepare them well for the rigors of higher learning and
conditioning for future high stress and high tech jobs. I find this
perfectly acceptable for a certain segment of our overall US population
for which there are far too few. I think there is a misconception
about overachieving students. Many think of them as unsocialized nerds
who have no life outside of studying. Nothing could be further from
the truth. The vast majority of students attending Monta Vista High
School are well adjusted, well socialized, average looking and acting
kids like most others in mainstream America. However the high degree
of success of their graduates is testimony to the effectiveness of this
school's learning environment. You will find alumni populated among
the best universities in American and among the highest educated
citizens of all our professions, industry, academia, and govenment.

Best Regards,
