Rita, I think your opinion of Easy CD Creator is correct, but you still may be having a hardware problem. You might at least try reading a CD and see if the drive has a problem with that.
In any case, consider buying Nero Ver. 6.X. It is a very comprehensive piece of software, does DVD's as well as CD's, and because vendors unbundle it from OEM drives, it is AMAZINGLY cheap. Go on over to Yahoo shopping and search for Nero 6. Prices range from $99.99 to $3.95 (plus shipping) -- and that is not a typo. I believe the higher priced "Ultra Edition" may be slightly better, but for $3.95 - $5.00 (whoever has the cheapest shipping) it is the bargain of the century, and completely legal. If and when you get it, go on over to the Nero web site and upgrade the components you are interested in -- but most importantly the Nero Burning Rom. Here's a link to a vendor I know nothing about, but the price is right. http://store.yahoo.com/software-blowouts/nero6oemsuite1.html
I gave Nero a free trial some time back and liked it. But I was not into
burning CDs at the time, so passed it up. The free program I mentioned
in another post works as well as Nero, now that I've determined the problem resided in Easy CD Creator and not my hard drive.
I plan to replace this computer with a laptop before too long, and will
get one with a CD/DVD drive.
I have found by trial and error that a fair amount of free software works as well, or better, than proprietory programs. Some are bummers, but many are great.
My favorite piece of free software is EditPad Lite, a word processing utility that resides in my tray and is always available for pasting stuff I've copied from the web. It has more features than WordPad and substitutes well for more bulky and annoying programs like Microsoft Word. I also run a good free program to unzip zip files - Power Archiver. And a couple more are RegClean and IPResolve.
If your CDRW is in fact defective, you really should replace it with a CD/DVD burner. If you do, spend a few bucks more and get one of the newer dual layer +- models. I'm using an older version of the NEC ND3540A which can be had here for $41.99. http://vcdhelp.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=8428524/prsrt=1/ut=1805519388ce20ab
That drive will no doubt write CD's much faster than your current CDRW, and can handle dual layer DVD media when it get's cheap enough. Right now single layer DVD's cost about 35 cents each on 25 disk spindles. A single layer DVD does about 4.5 Gigs.
Lastly, here's a link where you can read reviews of DVD writers and media, plus a lot more. http://www.videohelp.com/

If your problem was with Easy CD Creator and not the hard drive then removing and reinstalling Easy CD Creator should fix it.
