A quick note: Germany counts its unemployed differently than we do. In
Germany you are unemployed if you work less than 15 hours/wk and want more
work.
In the US you are employed if you work 1hr/week, and the hell with what you
want.
There are other considerations too. One important one is that Germany counts
the unemployed in East Germany, which greatly increased its unemployed stats
since Reunification.
There are other differences too which I don't recall at the moment. The net
is, once allowances are made for the more honest German statistics, their
unemployment is about the same as ours, plus or minus. I seem to recall
about 7%, but don't quote me on it, while ours is about 5%.
