Re: Help in choosing ISP for USA Canada

I thought this might be a good group in which to post this query because many of you probably have had to deal with the problem that I am describing.

I travel frequently between Canada and the USA and within each country
with a Laptop/Notebook
computer and the stay periods are sometimes one nighters while in
transit but generally my destination point results in a stay of
2 to 3 months at a time. My current ISP, Sympatico (Bell
Canada), is hopeless. AOL does not appear to be much better except for
the proliferation of local access numbers in the USA and Canada(and
that's a good thing). I'm wondering about other ISPs like Net Zero and
Copper.net and Toast.net or others etc etc...where the prices might be
more reasonable than either of Bell Canada or AOL and the quality of
service better......Most of my travel is by car and
local access numbers all over Canada and US is desirable....accessing
E Mail is importatnt.....and web usage is extensive....

From those of you who have been there and done that.....do you have
any advice for me on what ISP might be best suited?

Would Net Zero be as good in Canada as it in USA....?

Thanks

I suggest that you post this question to news:news.newusers.questions . While this is a NG for newbies, your query should request that they give you the link of the NG which describes ISP's. There is one, and I recall getting the link at some distant point in the past.

Armed with that information, you can contact each in turn and ask specific questions such as their services and their costs.

I happen to use erols, which was purchased by rcn. This NG, is dial-up, and in some locations, they offer DSL. But it does offer 24/7 tech support as well as supporting Usenet( which many ISP's do not, especially the cheaper ones, such as NetZero and Netscape ).

Of course, you can seek a private news server for Usenet, such as news:news.individual.net , which many users of AOL have had to do, for an additional cost, but that you must add to the monthly cost of your ISP. That news server has a modest charge for the year, so that won't amount to much, but it doesn't support all the NG's, and I believe it does not include the binaries( if that's your thing ).

Any event, research will lead you to the ISP or combination of ISP's that will suit your needs at the price you think is fair.
