Someone poor with no money to buy anything other than food geared to
the weekly budget. I read in my local Canadian newspaper this morning
that one older lady , carrying two large plastic bags filled with
food, had stolen it to sustain herself and the eight grandchildren she
was looking after until relief workers were able to help them.

While some people were criminally looting, others were looting for
food to sustain themselves and their families through this ordeal. The
large majority of the people who stayed in New Orleans were the poor
who couldn't afford the money to relocate for however short a time.
While I wouldn't want to see the looters hanged by their thumbs I'm
certainly all for punishing them for their criminality and the
ugliness they brought into this terrible tragedy.
