Anti-Bush War Protest Gains Traction

Let the ignorant old fools who persist in indulging in character
assassination tactics and petty wisecracks* to discredit Sheehan say what
they like. She seems to have finessed her protest into stage center of the
national media. (No small feat.) Some 1627 candlelight vigils were held last
night across the nation grabbing a lot of media coverage in support of the
Sheehan protest. Many more Gold Star Wives and Mothers have stepped forward
to let their dissent be heard. Support for the Bush War continues to
plummet and the GOPs are leery of the mid-term elections as a result
according to this article into today's NYT:
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/18/politics/18repubs.html

One small example is a vigil held in my small town last night where the
mother of one of the war's first killed soldiers spoke out against the war.
(I wasn't there by the way.) Below is the article from our local paper this
morning. There are thousands more like it across our country. If Bush had
simply invited Sheehan in for a cup of tea and some sympathy, he could have
avoided this growing embarrassment that now has him looking like an
insensitive cad in a no-win predicament.

*This being a good example of same. See how little good it does! Just
makes me and others who do it look like, well, ignorant old fools.

Vigil honors war dead

GREENFIELD - About 130 people gathered on the Greenfield Town Common for a
candlelight vigil to support Cindy Sheehan, the mother whose son was killed
in Iraq and who is now encamped in front of President Bush's Texas ranch.

"I'm here because of the plight of Mrs. Sheehan," said Kathleen Belanger of
Deerfield, whose son, Army Sgt. Gregory Belanger, was killed by a roadside
bomb two years ago. "She wants to talk to the president, and I support her
in that endeavor. There are a lot of mothers who want answers."

Belanger said this is the first time she has ever attended such a vigil, and
that the decision to do so was "a double sword."

"On one hand, I know our soldiers are proud of what they're trying to do to
help the Iraqi people," she said. "On the other hand, we were supposed to be
there because there were weapons of mass destruction."

Her son was among the first 200 soldiers killed in the war, she noted. "Now,
there's 1,800 killed and 14,000 wounded. Greg felt, when 9/11 happened, it
was his duty to go over and make sure this would never again happen to us.
I'm very proud of him," she said. "I'm very proud of those who are there,
but my heart aches for everyone who has lost a child."

"This Monday, Greg would have been 26," she said. "I have memories of him
that nobody can take away."

Many others at the vigil carried signs that said "Stop the War" and "Moms
for Peace." Car horns honked support at vigil-goers as motorists drove by.

Theresa Conti, who organized the Greenfield vigil on behalf of moveon.org,
said she was amazed and pleased by the broad range of people who attended
the vigil.
