I'm not usually a conspiracy theory supporter, but it seems quite obvious to
me that the western world's presence in Iraq was never about 9/11, Saddam
Hussein or weapons of mass destruction. Its just about securing oil

That has been the case ever since the British Royal Navy switched from coal
to oil; the Ottoman empire was broken up to give 'us' control over the
best oil supply on the planet (and provide a source of friction between
'us' and Russia ever since). I don't think anyone who was paying
attention ever thought "9/11" had anything to do with the invasion of
Iraq. One plausible theory as to the real trigger for the war is the Iraqi
government deciding to sell its oil in Euros instead of US Dollars -
prompting people holding Dollars to sell them to buy Euros instead, thus
exposing the US economy and national debt and trade balance to the real
world for the first time since WWII.
