David likely has a form of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. It is
his compulsion and need to continually refill his narcissistic
supply. Right now, he has worn out his welcome in a few archaeology
groups, a meteorology group, and a fibromyalgia group. It's likely
that he's come back here to get more attention since his five minutes
have been used up in the other groups. Think about it: his two posts
here today have contradicted each other, and has garnered attention he
is not getting in the other, more appropriate groups.

David is a sick man who needs to pull his head out of the sand about
how sick he is and get help ASAP.

Carl also posted his 'The less <insert ng> talk about my personal
background the better' post to sci.archaeology and
soc.history.ancient.

I don't know if it's the case here, but in those ngs, the position of
obsessive religious idea pusher has recently been usurped by another
guy. We've been paying a lot of attention to the other guy (mostly to
figure out whether he's capable of actual discussion--he's not), and
Carl's posts are very seldom replied to, except by one or two folks
who have some need for self-promotion themselves.

Carl desperately, desperately needs to be ignored, in my view.

It may be that his behavior on the ngs is in some way cathartic,
saving him from having to do things that cause worse harm to himself
or other people in RL. This is possible.

However, it is also possible that his on-line behavior just feeds his
mental and emotional problems, providing him just enough relief that
he can feel comfortable (in the sense of him feeling reassured that
his worldview is correct, and people really don't understand him, and
abuse him falsely), and not feel the pain that might result in him
seeking help. Or, more likely in his case, others seeking help on his
behalf.

Tom, first of all, welcome to SRQ proper rather than just as a 'crosspost'.
Sorry it is no longer displaying its former glory of discussing Quaker
issues, they seem to be have driven out by a hanful of monomaniacs and the
flooding of the group with their nonsense.

Whilst not a registered member of RSoF, I do try to uphold the principles of
Quakerism. One is to listen to and judge the message rather than the
messenger. This is what I have been trying to do with David - I have put in
filters so that I never see anything crossposted to SCA or SA, or anything
that woudl trigger my "Australian Female Religion Proffessor that wrote
about her individual interpretation method of certain ancient documents
found near a very salty inland lake" filter, but chose not to totally plonk
David as that would be - to my mind (and spirit) judging the messenger
rather than the message. Sometimes David does inspire a good conversation
that it at least somewhat related to Quakerism, and it would be a shame to
miss those oppurtunities by ignoring him completely. There are only a few
regulars here in SRQ now, and anything that helps stimulate conversations
and healthy discussion is welcome, IMHO.

This is of course why our resident loonies thrive here in SRQ - because
Quakers will listen patiently to whatever anyone has to say, trying
desperately to resist the urge to judge the message that htey are currently
hearing on the past track record of the messnger and only judge the mesage
on its own merits. And if hte message does have merit, even a small one, the
Quaker feels that one ought to reply out of respect. This is (one of) the
difficulties of trying to be a Quaker :-)

This is why perhaps David should post here if anywhere. In the whole of
unmoderated usenet, this here little NG is probably the safest for him.
Other groups - as he has found - are less..... tolerant. And the few SRQ
people who are left are capable of using clever filters if we do want to
interact with him. He knows what filters I use (I have told him, and have
repeated them to you) and if he wants to talk to me, he knows that he won't
get a response if he starts talking about those subjects.

I Googled the doctor of David in the hopes that s/he was a shrink and that
we could contact them and show them David's posts on Usenet. When I put in
the Doctor's name, I found a message in a totally unrelated group that
exactly reflects what you have posted above. There is far too much
commonality for it to be just a coincidence:

I keep hoping that Carl is really a long-term, highly successful
troll, who is sitting at the computer in his psychology lab having a
laugh at all of us. But that's not the way to bet.

Thats always a possibility, and why even if dealing with the most obvious of
trolls, it best (IMHO) to behave reasonably and civilly, or else plonk them.
No point being reactive or rude - its what trolls (the kooky kind and hte
ones doing psych studies) crave and doesn't acheive anything positive for
anyone involved (except perhaps the troll)
