Pacifism without the Prince of Peace is of little value.

I think you would find that many or most Quakers would put that the
other way round.

I seriously doubt that, Ian. Most Quakers you know might, but you
have to realize that liberal unprogrammed Quakers are probably only
about 10-15% of worldwide Quakers.

I know that, but as far as I can see the peace testimony is not the
sole province of the liberal branch. I'd be interested to know of
branches of Quakerism which are /not/ pacifist.

From Northwest Yearly Meeting:

"We believe the precepts of Christ our Lord and the whole spirit of
His Gospel call us to live at peace with all people. Therefore we
consider war and violence incompatible with the holiness we profess."

From Rocky Mountain Yearly Meeting

"The teachings of Jesus, the whole spirit of His gospel, and the
provisions of His grace call men and women to live at with one
another. Life is sacred; therefore, war and violence are not
consistent with the practice of Christian holiness to which believers
are called by Christ."

From Ohio Yearly Meeting

"As we believe that all war is wrong, so we believe that all
preparation or training for war is wrong. Military conscription is
inconsistent with the teaching and practices of Christianity."

In my experience friends of all sorts generally believe that it is
pointless to profess allegiance to a Prince of Peace and yet not have
a personal commitment to peace. Which was my point.
