Ended My Fast

I ended my fast about ten days ago, on the 45th day. I didn't exercise
enough to maintain my muscle mass, nor to lose much weight, so I plan to
fast again sometime soon. I think my weight went from about 170 to 140,
but I'd like to lose a lot more fat and put on some muscle.
Many chronic problems went away during the fast, and some have returned.
For example, I've had a runny nose now and then since I quit, which I
suspect may be evidence of a food allergy -- perhaps to casein, the
protein in my yogurt and coffee creamer, or perhaps to wheat. I really
don't know what it is.
An occasional rash on my face (especially alongside my nostrils) went
away (almost completely) during the fast, though I used my prescription
cream much less than usual. Now it's better than it used to be, but
isn't gone, despite using the medication regularly. I've had it for years.
Occasional joint problems went away completely, but recently I've
noticed a hint or two of their return: a slight weakness in my left knee
and a sensation of possible problems in my knuckles.
All my other chronic complaints have disappeared: occasional numbness on
the back of one toe, occasional pains in my shoulders, acne on my back,
strong food cravings, fungus under a toenail, gastrointestinal pains and
indigestion, occasional constipation and temporary hemorrhoids,
headaches, nervousness, anxiety, depression, confusion especially on
awakening and when sleepy, heart palpitations, and so on.
And I think my reading ability and concentration have improved.
I have a hunch that simply letting the intestinal flora die off is
therapeutic, and so is losing fat, which produces something bad -- I
forget what -- perhaps histamine or cortisol. Perhaps letting my bowels
empty completely and shrink down to a smaller size, letting my pancreas
regain total control over my blood sugar, and letting my blood vessels
recover from frequent floods of lipoproteins and various hormones also
helped.
The next time I fast, I intend to "cheat" much less. I only had
carbohydrates two or three times, but I won't do that again -- and no
more creamer in my coffee and tea, either.
A recent article in "Science News" ("Skeletal Discovery," p. 83, v. 172,
Aug 11, 2007) reported that (in special mice) osteoblasts (the active
bone cells that lay down new bone -- as opposed to osteoclasts, which
remove it) induce the pancreas to emit insulin, and fat cells both to
store less fat and to emit adiponectin (which improves cells'
sensitivity to insulin). They do it by releasing osteocalcin.
In other words, as bones get stronger, they reduce the main problems
associated with type-2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome!
The article didn't mention it, but perhaps bone-building exercises (like
weight-lifting, stair-climbing, hard bike-riding, body-building, etc.)
may combat those problems.
