The northern no-fly zone in Iraq successfully protected the Kurds from Saddam

Thereby protecting a society in which women are appallingly oppressed,

consequences, eh?

The lot of Kurdish women is no worse than that of women in many parts of
the world - and of women in Christendom until as recently as the early
20th century. Kurdish women (and at least some Kurdish men) are working,
with some success, towards improving that. Of course, belonging to a
people who are an oppressed minority whose homeland is artificially
divided between several countries whose only point of agreement is their
mutual dislike of Kurds, doesn't help them at all.

Kurdish women suffered far worse from the former Iraqi regime than from
their own culture.
