The record suggests otherwise. Go and do your own count, and you will
find that any troll-feeding results in large numbers of abusive posts
by the trolls, while my objecting to said troll-feeding results in a
far lower number of abusive posts by the trolls. This is a well-known
effect that has been documented many times in many newsgroups.

If so, that supports my assertion that it is responding to them that
feeds the trollery. If they post direct responses to my posts, the
cycle is broken at that point, because I neither see or respond to
those responses. If nobody responds to them, then I have no way of
even knowing that there is any trolling going on, and thus cannot
make any comments about trolling or troll-feeding.

The above reminds me of the mantra of the alchoholic in denial;
"My drinking isn't the real problem. It's you complaining about
my drinking that is the real problem!" A newsgroup full of posts
by flamers is a problem. It drives away participants. Those who
feed trolls are a direct cause of that problem. To paraphrase
Florian, even the most thoughtful response to abusive trolls is
like serving them Lobster Thermidor aux Crevettes with Mornay sauce
served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished
with truffle pate, with a fried egg and spam on top. Look at the
recent responses by the trolls if you doubt this. I know without
bothering to look that their responses will be nothing more than
self-justification and further abuse.
