If you don't know the play I'd recommend Measure for Measure by Shakespeare
to you. It is my favourite play by Shakespeare; one that I think should be
better known. I saw it again just days ago. Having of late become concerned
with events in Iraq, I was struck by how much of a parallel there was towards
notions of sexuality and honour in this play c1603, with current notions in
the middle east. The play is all about the hurt done by a self preserving
judge, who is undone by lust. The play ends on such a note of compassion,
where none might expect to find grounds for any, that it is almost harder to
be unmoved by the compassion than all that came before.
