I think many folks *do* cite the dictionary..if only to distinguish one
from another. However, we might be talking apples and oranges.
Dictionaries are reference tools to aid us in our ability to communicate.
It is assumed (I think) that the definitions and spellings pointed to in
references like dictionaries, thessaurum (?) etc. are reached by collective,
social concensus...in English at least, since we don't have an Academie
Francaise ;-). As far as I know those references that help us spell
correctly and use words correctly are not subject to attribution. I could
be wrong.
