I dunno 'bout this. In every mythology book I know of, from Edith Hamilton
on, Vulcan is the Roman cognate for Hephastos, explicitly, as Minerva was
for Athena, and Jupiter was Zeus Pater.

You can find references to Vulcan as a fire god before being tied to
Hephaestus in Encyclopedia Britannica.


You also completely miss the Anglo-Saxon Wayland Smith, who I, personally,
sorta like, and could cheerfully put him together with Bridget.


I was emphasizing the fire god aspect not the later blacksmith.
